Campus Chaos: Matchup 2

Transy
Head for the hills!
Transylvania University
Lexington, KY

Once a semester, the Disciples on Campus (DOC) group at Transylvania departs from the city life of Lexington, Kentucky for the weekend for some much need relaxation, renewal, fellowship, and fun. We usually go to one of the many state parks in Kentucky or to a retreat center nearby. The only requirement for seems to be that we must have somewhere to lay our heads in the evening and it must be in the middle of nowhere.

We spend the weekend discussing a given spiritual topic with our keynote speaker, hiking, and taking part in fellowship with friends, new and old. It is in these times, worshiping God in the cool night air and falling asleep on a rock in the middle of the woods while hiking with friends that we all seem to have come to know God best. This is the side of God that we all knew as children, among the rocks and trees and animals. I am always so happy to become reacquainted.

At the weekend’s end, I am sad to see our time draw to a close, but I know that God will always be right there for all of us, just beyond my doorstep, waiting among the trees.

Springfield
Where everybody knows your pancake!
United Ministries in Higher Education
Springfield, MO

Pancakes. Everybody likes them. Friends. Everybody needs them. College students like nothing more than hanging out with friends and eating. Each Sunday evening “The House” (our campus ministry home complete with WiFi and 42” flat screen TV) provides the setting for students to come together, cook pancakes, share a devotion and enjoy the relaxing company of friends. Everyone is welcome. Students are encouraged to be creative with the culinary delights of pancakes. Pumpkin, peanut butter, blueberry and my favorite apple often appear. “Pancakes” is one example of a campus ministry of hospitality. It is a good entry point for new students who may be reluctant to initially join a Bible study, discussion group or mission experience. Campus ministry is very relationship intensive and simple “points of human contact” need to be maximized. “Pancakes” works.
