Disciples on Campus
Chapman University
Orange, CA
In South Africa the average life expectancy is around 43 years. This
happens partly because of HIV/AIDS and the poor living conditions.
After the Apartheid many of the residents were left without housing and
began congregating into what is now called Kayamandi. Kayamandi has a
population of about 20,000 people. Many of these people live in shacks
with an average of 5x5 meters of floor space. Along with the poor
living conditions about 22% of people living in South Africa have
HIV/AIDS. With thousands of people dying from poor living conditions
and diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Chapman University’s Disciples on Campus
(DOC) students feel called to reach out and with hearts and hands.
For two and a half weeks in January 2007 roughly 25 DOC students and
sponsors will travel to South Africa to learn about apartheid,
HIV/AIDS, and to volunteer at Kayamandi. With the assistance of the
Disciples/UCC office of Global Ministries and the guidance of Peace
Studies Professor Don Will, students will be attending lectures at the
University of Stellenbosch, helping with HIV and AIDS work and
interacting with the children and youth of Kayamandi. These two weeks
in South Africa will grow DOC students closer in friendship and faith,
and will help them be stronger and more compassionate advocates for
social justice.

Cooperative Campus Ministry
Lynchburg College
Lynchburg, VA
Lynchburg College has a Cooperative Campus Ministry which is made up of
ministries from several different faith denominations. We approach
campus ministry on the LC campus from an unified approach. At the start
of each academic year we host a campus-wide picnic for all students.
The event is hosted by the Cooperative Campus Ministries and we invite
churches and religious organizations from all over Lynchburg to provide
informational materials about their local churches and programs. Our
on-campus faith groups also have information about their on-campus
ministries. Students are provided with transportation schedules to
local churches and an academic year calendar of lectures, socials,
service events and other ministries so that they are well informed.
