Service Opportunities and Internships

Quick list:

Disciples Peace Intern
What are you doing this summer? Want to help change the world?

Disciples Peace Fellowship is looking for its 2008 Peace and Justice Interns. Interns spend the summer traveling from camp to camp talking with youth about peace and justice issues, with an emphasis this year on alternatives to war.

Selected interns spend a week in Indianapolis for orientation and training before heading off across the country, a different event each week. Interns will each participate in seven to eight weeks of camp all over the country. Interns' schedules will include, on average, two week-long breaks during the summer. These breaks are a necessary part of getting rest, having time to evaluate and plan. During these breaks, Interns are responsible for their own expenses, but everything will be done to keep these expenses at a minimum. Breaks are likely to be in the geographic area of the camp directly preceding or following the break.

Interns receive a stipend of approximately $2,250 for the summer, plus most expenses. Room and board are provided by each region hosting Interns. Interns are expected to complete a written report/evaluation at the conclusion of the summer. The internship lasts from the end of May to the middle of August.

Interns are persons who model peacemaking and nonviolence in their own lives, who can communicate effectively with senior high youth, and who see peacemaking as a part of their Christian commitment. Applicants must be 21 years of age by June 1, 2008. Members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are given preference, but all persons are welcome to apply.

The application form can be downloaded from www.dpfweb.org or email me for a copy. Any questions can also be directed to Kathy Coggins at disciplespeacefellowship@gmail.com or 317.466.0980. Applications are due February 29.

In 2008, March 7-10, we will gather for the sixth annual Ecumenical Advocacy Days conference. Our theme, ’2008: Claiming A Vision of True Security’ promises to inspire an expected gathering of over 1,000 religious advocates from a wide array of Christian communions. Experts will train participants how to do advocacy and inform them of U.S. domestic and international policies that focus on a movement toward a new vision of true human security - one which seeks not only the absence of tension, but the presence of justice (Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.). The 2008 Ecumenical Advocacy Days will culminate with lobby visits on Monday calling upon our government to conceive new visions of security in our homes, our neighborhoods and our world.

"Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but our trust in the name of our God." - Psalm 20:7 (New King James Bible)

"Some take pride in chariots, and some in horses, but our pride is in the name of the Lord our God." - Psalm 20:7 (NRSV)

In the language of today, Psalm 20:7 might read: Some trust in violence and take pride in technologies of war, and some in military power, but our trust is in the unfailing love and faithfulness of our saving God.

It is time to move beyond the misdirected strategies of the past few years and envision a new pathway to true human security - one which seeks not only the absence of tension, but the presence of justice (Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.). The 2008 Ecumenical Advocacy Days assembly will explore new visions of security in our homes, our neighborhoods and our world.

(Review written by Meredith Jackson, UC-Davis)

By March 2005 I was tired of school and I was looking for a way to spend a weekend away from home. On a whim, I signed up for Advocacy Days, and went out to DC to see what I could learn about global security and the nuclear weapons danger. The weekend was amazing. In addition to spending most of the day focusing on our particular tracks, participants came together in the morning and the evening for meals, plenary, and worship. There is a wide ecumenical representation at every Advocacy Days, giving participants the opportunity to come together over a common interest- global peace and justice. In the evening you can make time to go into the city and see the monuments by moonlight- a beautiful sight. The culmination of the conference is the lobbying day on Monday. Accompanied by others from your region, the power is in your hands to take the issues you've been studying over the weekend and lobby for those issues with your representatives.

Feeling like you might need a break? Or just want to get more involved in justice issues? Go to Advocacy Days! The young adult program is growing exponentially, and if you are interested in justice you should join the movement and become an active participant through this conference.
