Taizé
Omolara Williams, Lancaster Theological Seminary Spiritual Formation with Youth

Perched atop a small hill in the mountains of southern France, the Taizé community offers a very simple yet distinctive style of worship. A combination of candle light, beautifully basic songs, scripture readings, silent meditation and prayer creates a peaceful, introspective atmosphere, an oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It's simplicity makes it ideal for any community of worshippers regardless of linguistic or ideological similarities and differences. Come experience it for yourself and learn how to share it with others back home.

The first thirty minutes will be spent in worship. Taize worship happens in silence, thus we will enter silently and sit on the floor. We will spend approximately 10-20 minutes in song, 5 minutes with scripture and depending on the group 5 -10 minutes in silence. After the service I will spend 5-10 minutes with the group reflecting on what the experience was like for them and their responses. The following 5-15 minutes I will use to give a brief overview of the Taizé community, the components of their worship, and the development of this worship style. The penultimate 5 minute will be used to direct attendees to web resources for Taize worship materials and briefly skim over adaptations and additional components I have used or seen used in Taize style worship. The final five minutes goes to Q & A and general musings.

Omolara Williams: Born and raised in Atlanta, Ga, I consider myself a southern girl-- even though I currently reside in W. Hartford, CT with my mommie when not in school at Columbia University in New York City. As a pescetarian vegan I most often miss the cool, creamy texture of ice-cream, heavy on the cream, and thoroughly appreciate the culinary prowess of my poppy; As a member of the UCC I firmly believe that God is still speaking and may never stop (ever); As member of our human community I am committed to a sustainable lifestyle and seek to empower others to live their lives out loud and realize themselves fully through self-awareness, self-care and self-expression in everything they do. I wish you peace, I wish you power, I wish you passion, and I look forward to meeting you.
