Loving our neighbor

Chrissy Stonebraker What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.
    — Micah 6:8

This scripture has been the basis of my devotion to social justice issues around the world. I am passionate about justice thanks to my faith. My life at Hiram has afforded me the opportunity to meet so many unique types of people. In particular, I'd like to share with you about two friends of mine.

These two girls are great friends of mine. The are both well educated, Caucasian women. One comes from a comfortable family upbringing in suburban Columbus, Ohio. The other comes from little means in very rural Northwestern Pennsylvania. These two women do not have a highly religious background. In fact, both have had bad experiences within the Christian environment. Neither of them really believe in Christianity since their views have been skewed by hypocrisy. However, as their friend, they see my interactions with others, and they know and love my Christian background. St. Francis of Assisi said, "Preach the gospel at all times, if necessary use words." I am actually often given the opportunity to show my faith with others without being a critical religious person.

Both of my friends happen to be homosexual, and this is where some of their negative feelings about organized religion stem. They both really appreciate my passion to help with injustices they face on a regular basis. They too have a passion for human rights and social justice issues in general. They too wish and hope for equality among all peoples. The fact that I let others know that I am passionate about these things BECAUSE of my faith, lets me grow as a Christian. I can be proud in being a non-judgemental Christian. I hope you choose to be a non-judgmental Christian and work towards what God ultimately wants for our lives. Peace. Didn't he tell us to love our neighbor?
